Then & now

The 2013 capstone in Unreal Engine 3, and the 2026 remake that runs in your browser.

The 2013 start: a white hallway with black arches, Start Game, Press E to Begin Game The 2026 start: the Hallway, a corridor of doors, one to each room
Where it starts: a bare hallway and a key to press in 2013, the Hallway with a door to every room in 2026.
Pillars in the 2013 Unreal original: the player's silhouette at the pit's edge, a red button on a pillar and blue pads Pillars in the 2026 WebGL remake, from the same spot: spiked walls, the red button and orange pads
Pillars, from the same spot in both.
Box in a Ball in the 2013 Unreal original: a green faceted ball around a glowing yellow box with a red button inside Box in a Ball in the 2026 WebGL remake: a tiled sphere around the box, its opening and a portal inside
Box in a Ball: looking up into the box from the inside of the ball.
Escher's Relativity in the 2013 original: looking up a stairwell of green-lit stairs around a tall block Escher's Relativity in the 2026 remake: looking up at stairs climbing across walls in every direction
Relativity was redesigned for the remake, so the two don't line up: looking up the stairs, then and now.
Escher's Relativity in the 2013 original: a landing under a staircase, with a doorway and a pillar Escher's Relativity in the 2026 remake: the whole room from the floor, stairs and blocks on every surface
The redesigned room: a landing in 2013, the whole room from the floor in 2026.

Now: the browser remake

Escher Plex is a first-person puzzle game about gravity. Pick up the magnetic boots in the training room and any metal surface you walk into becomes the floor: walls, ceilings, the underside of a moving platform. The rooms only make sense once you stop caring which way is down.

The 2026 remake is built from scratch in three.js and TypeScript, with a gravity walker of its own (a capsule controller that carries its own up vector) instead of a physics engine with a fixed down. Nine rooms are in so far: Training, Upside Down, Stone Walls, The Pit, Air Shaft, Pillars, Escher's Relativity, where see-through portal arches carry your gravity from one surface to the next, Box in a Ball and Doors. Each has its own best-time leaderboard on playallday.games.

The levels are rebuilt as data, using the original Unreal maps as the reference, in a scene editor made for the job, so they can keep growing.

Then: Unreal Engine 3, 2013

The original was my capstone project, made to challenge every level of player. You navigate a series of rooms, and to keep it a real challenge I let the player walk along any surface. That turned into an interesting mechanic and a fun one to design for. The game includes one of M.C. Escher's more famous ideas, an endless staircase, as well as moving walls and platforms.
